SPRINGFIELD, VA, July 20, 2005 - Donald Martin, a rising sophomore at the College of William & Mary, received the 2005 James G. McGiffin scholarship award from Vantria Federal Credit Union. Accompanied by his family, Martin picked up a $1,000 check at the credit union.

“I was very excited to receive the James G. McGiffin Scholarship. It is very encouraging and inspiring to both myself and other students to know that Vantria Federal Credit Union and the McGiffin family take a strong interest in the areas of education and community involvement. Thank you for your support and encouragement to me and the entire community,” said Martin.

Martin is majoring in public policy and environmental science. Apart from maintaining a 3.34 grade point average overall and a 3.57 in his major, Martin spends his time giving back to the community in a different activities. He participates in William & Mary’s environmental labs, where they test the quality of the environment, the human impact on surrounding features and discuss their findings. He serves as a 4-H Club Ambassador creating new 4-H Clubs for at-risk youth. The 4-H Club helps to develop self-esteem, problem-solving, personal development, and global understanding in youth ages 9 - 19. It stands for head, heart, hands, and health. During the school year, Martin works as a student supervisor at the University Center. This summer, he is working as an intern for the Defense Energy Support Center, a part of the Defense Logistics Agency at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

“I developed databases that contain more than 1,300 contacts worldwide. I also managed the fuel accounts for our nation’s military planes that require refueling during flight,” explained Martin.

The scholarship honors James G. McGiffin for his 30 years of dedication to Vantria and the credit union movement. He served Vantria in many different capacities: member, director, credit union officer, and committee member. He also worked with the Northern Virginia Chapter of Credit Unions and the Virginia Credit Union League. A bronze plaque in the Vantria foyer commemorates his commitment to the credit union.
